We’re delighted to share that Hosts International’s Director, Harsha Brown, recently joined The University Guys Podcast to discuss a topic close to our hearts: how student accommodation shapes far more than just where someone sleeps.

Beyond the bedroom

Talking to host David Hawkins, Harsha explored what she calls the ‘hidden curriculum’ of student accommodation, drawing on her own experience as an international student in the UK. The right choice isn’t just about where a student sleeps – it shapes how comfortable, confident and connected they feel, encouraging cultural understanding beyond the ‘international bubble’ of residence halls.

A changing landscape post-pandemic

Harsha discussed how student and parent expectations have shifted since 2020, with safety-consciousness growing and families wanting more choice and flexibility alongside essentials like a clean, private room and reliable wifi. Affordability remains central, but so are things like emotional wellbeing and cultural considerations – what suits a 17-year-old Italian student rarely suits someone in their mid-twenties from the US, for instance.

The realities of studying in a big city

For students drawn to London, Harsha was candid: university life there is often a commuter experience rather than a campus one. Her advice? Embrace the travelling as part of the experience, get out of the international bubble and use public transport like a local as that’s where real immersion happens.

Safeguarding with a personal touch

Harsha detailed the vetting of hosts behind every student placement – reference checks, police checks, DBS checks, home visits and interviews – stressing that safeguarding matters at every age, not just under-18s. Just as important is what happens afterwards: regular contact, feedback and a 24/7 emergency line, so students are never ‘just allocated and forgotten’.

Harsha’s advice to students

Harsha’s top tip: consider what’s genuinely right for you, not just what your parents assume. Stay open-minded, don’t expect instant perfection and remember that homesickness and culture shock are normal. It’s communication that gets you through it.

As Hosts International marks this special anniversary, we are taking a moment to reflect on the people, values and relationships that have shaped our journey. At the heart of that story is Peter Brown, whose dedication helped establish homestay accommodation as an important and trusted part of the international education experience.

Peter’s life’s work was rooted in his belief that education could open doors and that, with the right opportunity, everything was possible. One of his greatest joys was travelling the world, often to remote and less accessible places, to help bring education and opportunities to students who might otherwise never have had the chance to experience them. Together, Peter and Harsha built Hosts International over the past 25 years, continuing a journey that began in 1988 and has remained steady and resilient through changing times and countless challenges. For Peter, the journey was never simply about building a business. It was about creating opportunities, connecting people and believing in what was possible.

For more than 25 years at the helm of Hosts International, Peter brought integrity, warmth, laughter and quiet strength to everything he did. He believed passionately in the value of homestay accommodation and the difference a welcoming host family can make to a student’s experience.

His commitment to quality, his belief in people, his loyalty to those around him and his passion for meaningful cross-cultural experiences continue to influence the way Hosts International works today.

To honour Peter’s life and legacy, we are proud to introduce a number of initiatives designed to carry those values forward.

The Peter Brown Advisory Circle

Peter was known for being friendly, transparent, open and straight-talking. He was a trusted and respected voice within the international education and homestay sectors, and he valued honest conversations, shared experiences and strong professional relationships.

In that same spirit, Harsha Brown will lead and convene the Peter Brown Advisory Circle, bringing together a small group of trusted industry peers and long-standing connections who share the values and approach that Peter held so strongly.

The Advisory Circle will:

Offer guidance, insight and constructive challenge

Share experience to support sustainable growth and long-term stability

Provide a trusted sounding board for Harsha as she continues to lead Hosts International

Help ensure the business continues to evolve while remaining true to its foundations

Rather than being a formal board, the Advisory Circle will be a collective of like-minded individuals: people Peter respected and Harsha continues to trust.

Their knowledge, honesty and integrity will help support the next chapter of Hosts International.

For Harsha, this is also a way of honouring Peter’s approach to life and business: collaborative, thoughtful, resilient, human, real and grounded in strong relationships. At the same time, she continues to lead the company with her own strength, care and vision.

The Peter Brown Homestay Excellence Award

Host families are at the very heart of the homestay experience.

Every year, exceptional hosts go above and beyond to ensure international students feel safe, welcomed and supported. Often, it is the small things that make the biggest difference: a warm welcome after a long journey, a shared meal, a conversation at the end of the day or simply making a student feel that they belong.

The Peter Brown Homestay Excellence Award will recognise host families who embody the care, reliability and heart that Peter believed every student deserved.

Nominations will be accepted annually and reviewed by the Hosts International team, taking into account relevant criteria, student and partner feedback, and the experiences shared by those who have worked with our hosts.

The selected host will receive a certificate, a small thank-you gift and recognition across Hosts International platforms.

It is our way of celebrating the people who make such a meaningful contribution to the international student experience.

The Peter Brown Homestay Bursary

Peter strongly believed in giving people opportunities.

In collaboration with our trusted partners, Hosts International will offer a select number of free or subsidised homestay places each year in Peter’s name.

The Peter Brown Homestay Bursary will support students from underrepresented backgrounds or those experiencing financial hardship, giving them the opportunity to experience a safe, supportive and enriching homestay in the UK or Ireland.

For Peter, homestay was about much more than accommodation. It was about people, connection, cultural exchange and creating experiences that students could carry with them long after they returned home.

This bursary will help make those opportunities accessible to more students.

Empowering Women in Business and the Workplace

Another important part of Peter’s legacy is his belief in fairness and opportunity.

He believed in giving people a chance, particularly women and young professionals. His quiet feminism could be seen in the way he supported his wife, daughter and colleagues, encouraging them to grow, develop and take the lead.

That belief continues to form part of the culture at Hosts International.

As part of Peter’s legacy, we remain committed to mentorship, training and greater visibility for women across the international education and homestay sectors.

This commitment is reflected in our company culture, our approach to hiring and development, and our wider legacy initiatives.

Continuing Peter’s Legacy

A legacy is not simply about looking back. It is about taking the values that mattered and carrying them forward.

Peter believed in people. He believed in doing things properly. He believed in relationships built on trust, in giving others opportunities and in the power of homestay to create genuine cultural connections.

These are values that remain deeply embedded in Hosts International.

Through the Peter Brown Advisory Circle, the Homestay Excellence Award, the Homestay Bursary and our continued commitment to empowering women, we hope to ensure that Peter’s influence continues to make a positive difference across the international education community.

Join Us in Honouring Peter’s Legacy

We would love to hear from schools, education partners and host families who have a story, memory or experience that captures what Peter meant to them. If you knew Peter through Hosts International, international education or the wider homestay community, I would genuinely love to hear from you. Whether you have a special memory, a story to share or simply a few words about the difference Peter made to you, I would be very grateful to hear from you.

We also welcome nominations and opportunities to collaborate on these initiatives.

If you would like to get involved, please contact Harsha Brown at harsha@hosts-international.com.

Peter’s legacy lives on through the people he inspired, the relationships he built and the values he believed in. And, most importantly, through the continued work of making international students feel safe, welcomed, supported and at home. Thank you for helping us keep his memory and legacy alive.

Every international student arrives with a suitcase full of expectations. They come ready to learn, discover a new culture, build friendships and take an important step towards their future. Yet long before they attend their first lecture or settle into a timetable, another experience shapes how that journey unfolds.

Where they live.

Accommodation is often viewed as an administrative task that sits alongside enrolment and travel arrangements. In reality, it has a powerful influence on how students feel, how quickly they adapt and ultimately how successful they become during their time abroad.

For education providers, accommodation should never be treated as a separate service. It is an essential part of the student experience, playing a vital role in wellbeing, safeguarding, academic achievement and student satisfaction. At Hosts International, we believe that every successful educational journey begins with a place where students feel welcomed, supported and at home.

Accommodation Shapes More Than Comfort

When students first arrive in a new country, almost everything around them is unfamiliar. Different customs, different food, a different language and a completely new environment can feel exciting, but also overwhelming.

A safe and welcoming home provides far more than somewhere to sleep. It creates stability during a period of significant change. Students who feel comfortable where they live are often more confident exploring their new surroundings, participating in lessons and engaging with local communities.

That sense of security creates the foundation for learning. When students are not worried about where they are living, they are free to focus on achieving their academic goals.

Student Wellbeing Begins At Home

Wellbeing has become one of the most important conversations within international education. Schools, colleges and universities are investing more resources into supporting students beyond the classroom because they recognise that emotional health directly influences academic success. Accommodation plays a central role in this.

A supportive host family offers routine, reassurance and everyday conversations that help students settle into their new environment. Simple moments such as sharing an evening meal, asking about their day or helping them understand local customs can make an enormous difference to how connected a student feels.

For younger learners, this support offers reassurance during their first experience away from home. For university students and postgraduates, it provides a valuable balance between independence and knowing that someone is there if they need guidance. Students who feel supported are more likely to attend classes regularly, participate confidently and remain engaged throughout their programme.

The Link Between Accommodation And Academic Success

Success in education depends on far more than the quality of teaching alone. Research consistently highlights the connection between student wellbeing and academic performance. When students are sleeping well, eating balanced meals and feeling emotionally secure, they are better equipped to concentrate, retain information and perform well in assessments.

Accommodation directly contributes to each of these factors. A peaceful environment encourages healthy routines. Reliable hosts help students establish daily structure. Living with local families also creates opportunities to practise English naturally outside the classroom, accelerating language development in ways that formal lessons alone cannot achieve.

These everyday experiences support stronger academic outcomes while helping students develop confidence in real world situations.

Building Confidence Through Everyday Life

Some of the most valuable lessons international students learn never appear on a syllabus. Ordering food, using public transport, understanding cultural differences and building relationships with people from another country all contribute to personal growth. Living with a carefully selected host family gives students daily opportunities to develop these practical life skills in a supportive environment. They gradually become more independent while still having trusted adults available to answer questions or provide reassurance when needed.

This balance between freedom and guidance is increasingly important for today’s students. They want independence, but they also value knowing that support is close by. The result is greater confidence that stays with them long after their course has finished.

Creating Genuine Cultural Connections

One of the main reasons students choose to study abroad is to experience life in another country. Accommodation can either strengthen or limit that opportunity. Students who live within local communities experience everyday British life in an authentic way. They gain insights into traditions, customs, family life and local culture that cannot be taught in a classroom. These experiences help students feel part of their community rather than simply passing through it.

Many students also form lasting friendships with their host families, creating memories that remain long after they return home.

For parents, these meaningful connections provide reassurance that their child is not facing their new environment alone.

Parents Expect More Than Excellent Education

Families making decisions about international education are investing in far more than academic qualifications. Parents want confidence that their children will be safe, supported and cared for throughout their stay. They want clear communication. They want reliable safeguarding processes. They want to know there is someone looking out for their child’s wellbeing every day.

Accommodation has become one of the strongest indicators of that commitment. A trusted accommodation partner demonstrates that an education provider understands the importance of the whole student experience rather than focusing solely on academic delivery.

Safeguarding Extends Beyond Campus

Student welfare cannot begin and end inside the classroom. Education providers have a responsibility to understand what happens outside teaching hours because this is where many wellbeing concerns first emerge. Professional accommodation providers play an important role in safeguarding by maintaining high standards, carefully selecting host families, carrying out regular checks and remaining in close contact with both students and educational institutions.

Strong communication between accommodation teams and education providers allows concerns to be identified early and appropriate support to be offered when needed. This joined up approach helps students feel safer while giving institutions greater confidence in their overall student support strategy.

Student Retention Starts With Belonging

Students who struggle to settle into their new environment are more likely to become isolated, disengaged or consider leaving their course early. Feeling that they belong is one of the strongest predictors of student satisfaction and retention.

Accommodation contributes significantly to this sense of belonging.

A welcoming home helps students establish routines, build confidence and develop meaningful relationships from the moment they arrive. When students feel connected, they are more likely to enjoy their experience, recommend their institution to others and complete their studies successfully.

More Than A Place To Stay

Accommodation should never be viewed as simply a practical requirement. It is one of the first and most influential experiences every international student has. It shapes confidence, supports wellbeing, encourages cultural understanding and creates the conditions for academic success. At Hosts International, we understand that exceptional accommodation is about people, relationships and genuine care.

By working closely with education providers, we help create environments where students can feel safe, welcomed and supported throughout every stage of their journey. Because when students feel at home, they are free to achieve everything they came abroad to accomplish.

For many years, educational institutions viewed accommodation as a supporting service. The priority was finding suitable hosts, placing students and ensuring accommodation was available when needed.

Over time, however, schools began to recognise something important. The challenge was not simply whether accommodation should be managed internally or sourced through an external provider. The real issue was understanding the significant time, expertise and resources required to deliver a consistently high quality homestay experience.

What often appeared to be a straightforward operational function was, in reality, a complex ecosystem involving safeguarding, compliance, host recruitment, welfare support and relationship management. As international student numbers grew and student expectations evolved, it became increasingly clear that accommodation was not just an administrative task. It was a critical part of the student experience and, ultimately, an institution’s reputation.

This shift in perspective has prompted many schools, colleges and universities to take a closer look at the true cost and complexity of managing homestay accommodation in house.

More Than Just Finding Hosts

When people think about accommodation costs, the focus is often on what hosts are paid. In reality, host payments are only one part of the picture. Behind every successful placement sits a significant amount of work, including recruitment, DBS checks, home visits, safeguarding reviews, inspections, training and ongoing monitoring.

There is also the reality that not every host stays active long term. Some may host for years, while others may stop after a single placement. This means accommodation teams are often in a constant cycle of recruiting, onboarding and supporting new hosts. When these costs are added together, the true investment per host can be much higher than expected.

The Hidden Pressure on Internal Teams

Perhaps the biggest challenge is the pressure placed on student services and accommodation staff. Managing homestays is not simply an administrative task. It often involves balancing the needs of students, parents, agents and hosts all at the same time. One day may involve helping a nervous student settle in, responding to a parent’s concerns, arranging a room move, dealing with a host query and coordinating an airport transfer.

Most accommodation professionals handle this incredibly well, but it can be demanding work. Over time, the constant need to solve problems, respond to emergencies and manage expectations can place significant pressure on internal teams, particularly during busy enrolment periods.

When Demand Outpaces Supply

Most institutions are familiar with the seasonal pressures that come with international recruitment. As student numbers increase, accommodation teams often face the challenge of securing enough suitable hosts while maintaining quality standards. Hosts may decline certain bookings, become unavailable at short notice or simply decide they no longer wish to host. The result is often a race against time to meet demand while ensuring students still receive a positive experience.

Does In House Always Mean More Control?

One of the most common reasons institutions keep accommodation in house is the belief that it provides greater control.

To some extent, that is true. However, control can become more difficult to maintain when resources are stretched and accommodation capacity is limited. When arrival dates are approaching and suitable hosts are in short supply, difficult decisions sometimes have to be made. Not because standards are unimportant, but because operational pressure is very real.

This raises an important question. Is accommodation management really about control, or is it about having the right expertise, systems and resources in place to consistently deliver quality?

The Costs That Often Go Unnoticed

Alongside recruitment and compliance costs, there are many smaller operational expenses that can quickly add up. Emergency moves, last minute transfers, welfare support, host payments, administrative tasks and unexpected issues all require time and budget.

There is also the challenge of cash flow. Hosts expect to be paid promptly regardless of student payment cycles, creating additional pressure for institutions managing accommodation internally. Individually these costs may seem minor, but together they can represent a significant investment.

Why More Institutions Are Exploring Partnerships

This is one reason why many colleges and universities are reconsidering how accommodation is managed. A trusted accommodation partner can provide specialist expertise, established host networks, compliance oversight and operational support, helping to reduce pressure on internal teams while maintaining a strong focus on student welfare and experience. The goal is not necessarily to give up control. It is often about sharing responsibility with specialists who understand the complexities of accommodation management.

A Strategic Part of the Student Experience

Homestay accommodation is no longer simply about placing students in available rooms. Today, it sits at the heart of safeguarding, wellbeing, student satisfaction and institutional reputation. Whether managed internally or through a trusted partner, accommodation deserves to be viewed as a strategic function rather than an administrative one. After all, for many international students, their experience starts long before they enter a classroom. It starts with where they live.

People often talk about international education through the lens of schools, university rankings, academic pathways, and future careers. But for students themselves, the experience is usually remembered in a much more human way. It is remembered through feelings. The feeling of stepping off a plane into complete unfamiliarity. The exhaustion of trying to adapt to a different culture while pretending not to feel overwhelmed. The relief of hearing someone ask, “How was your day?” and genuinely meaning it. Long before grades improve or confidence becomes visible from the outside, students need to feel emotionally safe where they live. That is the part people often underestimate.

At Hosts International, homestay has never simply been about accommodation logistics or filling rooms. A student’s living environment affects far more than where they sleep at night. It influences how quickly they settle, whether they feel isolated or connected, how willing they are to participate socially, how resilient they become when challenges arise, and often even how well they perform academically. Because we work across language schools, boarding schools, guardianship, colleges, and universities, we see students at very different stages of their journey abroad. And regardless of age or background, one pattern appears again and again: students thrive when they feel supported as people first, not just treated as temporary guests.

Maria’s Story: Growing Into a New Life Abroad

Maria’s story is one that captures this beautifully. She arrived from Spain at just 15 years old to begin her A Levels in the UK. On paper, she looked prepared. In reality, she was carrying the quiet anxiety that many international teenagers experience when they suddenly find themselves far away from everything familiar. New school. New routines. New expectations. Even small things felt intimidating at first…understanding humour, navigating conversations, trying not to appear homesick.

When she moved into her homestay with Mrs Banks, what made the difference was not one grand gesture. It was the consistency of care. The feeling that someone was looking out for her in the background every day. Meals together. Conversations after school. Encouragement when things felt difficult. Slowly, the uncertainty started fading. Maria began joining local clubs, building friendships, engaging more confidently at school, and creating a life for herself that no longer felt temporary.

She stayed with the same host family from the age of 15 until 18, which says more than any testimonial ever could. By the end of those years, she had not simply adapted to life abroad – she had grown into it.

Summer’s Story: Finding Connection Beyond Student Halls

Summer, a postgraduate student from Taiwan studying Fashion and Arts in London, had a very different experience, but the emotional reality underneath it was surprisingly similar. She initially lived in halls of residence because it seemed like the obvious choice for university life. Yet despite constantly being surrounded by people, she felt disconnected from the city and from the experience she had imagined for herself. London felt huge and impersonal. The social interactions around her stayed surface level, and instead of feeling inspired, she started feeling invisible.

Moving into homestay changed the rhythm of her entire experience. Her host did not just provide accommodation; they helped her experience London properly. Through ordinary conversations and shared moments, Summer started becoming more confident navigating the city, exploring galleries and creative spaces, and understanding the culture around her in a more meaningful way.

The encouragement she received helped her open up socially, which eventually led to networking opportunities within creative circles and greater confidence professionally too. What is striking about her story is that homestay did not make her world smaller or more sheltered. It gave her the confidence to participate in life more fully.

Paolo’s Story: Learning Independence Naturally

For younger students, the impact of homestay is often tied closely to personal growth and independence. Paolo, a student from Brazil attending boarding school, regularly stayed with one of our host families during half terms and exeat weekends. He was shy, homesick, and still heavily dependent on his parents for everyday life skills.

Like many teenagers arriving from supportive family homes, he had never really needed to think about budgeting, routines, or practical responsibility before. What helped him was not formal teaching or strict discipline. It was simply being part of normal family life. He started learning naturally – how to manage money, how to organise himself, how to become more aware of the consequences of small decisions.

Outside the house, something as simple as playing football with the host father and son became a turning point socially. It gave him confidence, routine, and a sense of belonging that extended beyond school. Over time, the change in him became noticeable. He grew more independent emotionally and practically, even finding small ways to earn extra pocket money instead of relying entirely on his parents.

Those may sound like ordinary developments, but for many international students, they become major milestones in adulthood and self-confidence.

What Parents Are Really Looking For

The parent perspective is equally important, and often far more emotional than people realise. When Mrs Singh from India was searching for accommodation for her son, her worries had very little to do with facilities or convenience. She was worried about who her son was becoming.

He lacked structure, motivation, and independence. She felt he had become overly reliant on her for even the most basic routines and responsibilities. Sending him abroad was not only about education; it was about hoping he would mature, become more grounded, and learn how to take care of himself properly.

What she needed was not simply a place for him to stay. She needed trusted adults around him. People who would notice if he was struggling, encourage healthy routines, set expectations, and provide consistency in daily life. Just as importantly, she needed reassurance for herself while living thousands of miles away.

That ongoing communication and trust mattered enormously. Because for many parents, the greatest comfort is not luxury accommodation or modern facilities. It is knowing somebody genuinely cares whether their child is okay.

Why Homestay Still Matters

That is why homestay still matters so deeply, even in a world filled with modern student residences and independent living options. Convenience has become easier to find. Human connection has not.

A good homestay offers something many students do not even realise they need until they experience it: emotional grounding during one of the biggest transitions of their lives. It creates stability during uncertainty. It helps students build confidence quietly and naturally over time. It provides younger students with guidance and older students with a deeper connection to local culture and community. Most importantly, it reminds students that they are not navigating life abroad entirely alone.

At Hosts International, that human side of international education is at the centre of everything we do. Behind every successful student is usually a much bigger story than academic achievement alone. There is almost always a story about belonging, resilience, confidence, support, and the people who helped make an unfamiliar place feel like home.

Since its establishment in 1988, Hosts International has spent more than 35 years delivering trusted homestay accommodation across the UK and Ireland. We’re proud to reflect on a journey defined by care, resilience, and meaningful human connections. From humble beginnings with handwritten records to becoming a leading provider of student accommodation and welfare services, our story is one of dedication, adaptability, and a deeply personal approach.

The Early Days of Homestay Accommodation
Long before digital systems and instant communication, Hosts International operated with a simple but effective method: a card index box. Each host family had a handwritten card detailing their address and landline number, and student placements were carefully arranged over the phone.

As our network of host families grew, so did the stacks of cards—some of our most loyal hosts had multiple pages stapled together, reflecting years of partnership and trust.

In those early days, our commitment went far beyond administration. Our team would personally:

Drive to airports to collect international students

Welcome group arrivals across the UK

Provide a 24/7 emergency contact through Harsha’s personal mobile

Accompany students and host families to schools on their first day

This hands-on, human approach laid the foundation for the high-quality homestay experience we continue to deliver today.

Rising to the Challenge
Over more than three decades, Hosts International has supported students through some of the most challenging global events, always prioritising safety, welfare, and wellbeing.

Responding to Crisis: 9/11
During the uncertainty of 9/11, there was no formal crisis plan—only a strong sense of responsibility. Our team quickly coordinated efforts across London, ensuring all students were safely accounted for, while maintaining constant communication with concerned parents around the world.

Standing Strong During the 7/7 London Bombings
In July 2005, London faced one of its darkest days with the 7/7 bombings. The attacks on the city’s transport system created immediate chaos and widespread fear, impacting thousands, including international students living and studying in the UK.

For Hosts International, the priority was clear: ensure every student was safe, accounted for, and reassured during an extremely frightening time. Our team quickly mobilised to:

Contact all students and host families across London to confirm their safety

Provide guidance on travel restrictions and emergency protocols

Offer emotional support to students worried about family back home or unable to reach loved ones

The response demonstrated the resilience, dedication, and personal care that have always been the hallmark of our organisation. Even amidst a citywide crisis, the warmth and attentiveness of our host families ensured that students had a safe haven and the reassurance they needed.

Standing Together During COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges for international students in the UK and Ireland. With school closures and travel restrictions in place, many students were unable to return home.

We made a clear decision: every student would be supported, regardless of payment status.

Our incredible host families demonstrated extraordinary compassion by:

Providing safe, secure environments during lockdowns

Delivering meals and daily support

Offering emotional reassurance during uncertain times

These moments reinforced what makes homestay unique—it’s not just accommodation, it’s a support system and a home away from home.

Remembering Light-Hearted Moments
Over the years, we’ve collected countless stories that highlight the diversity, humour, and cultural exchange at the heart of what we do.

Some of our favourites include:

An international agent convinced that Harsha—known as “Harry”—was a man, only to be surprised upon meeting her

A Middle Eastern student who unexpectedly fell in love with his host family’s six dogs

A dramatic Pride rally evacuation, where our team flagged down black cabs across London, paid on personal credit cards, and successfully transported 50 students to the airport with just 20 minutes to spare

That same Italian group from the Pride incident continues to travel with us today—a testament to the long-lasting relationships we build.

More Than 35 Years of Homestay Care and Personal Service
Through global crises, cultural differences, and logistical challenges, one thing has remained constant: our unwavering commitment to exceptional student welfare and personalised service.

At Hosts International, we believe that successful homestay experiences are built on:

Trust between students, hosts, and partners

Cultural understanding and inclusion

Reliable support, 24 hours a day

A genuine passion for helping students feel at home

Be Part of the Next Chapter
As we look ahead, we remain dedicated to providing safe, welcoming, and high-quality homestay accommodation for international students across the UK and Ireland.

Whether you’re a student, agent, or prospective host family, we invite you to be part of our story.

Through pandemics, cultural misunderstandings, and logistical challenges, one thing has remained constant: our commitment to student welfare and the personal touch that defines Hosts International. Contact us today to experience more than 35 years of expertise, care, and personal service—and help us shape the next chapter of homestay excellence.

Behind every successful homestay placement is a team of professionals working quietly to ensure students feel welcome, safe, and supported. One of those professionals is Aneta Chua, Deputy Operations Manager at Hosts International, whose ten year journey reflects both personal growth and a deep commitment to supporting homestay hosts in the UK and Ireland.

As the sector moved into 2026, many professionals began reflecting on the past decade. For Aneta, that reflection naturally brought her back to March 2016.

“The year of 2026 started with everyone looking back and sharing their achievements and progress made in the past ten years,” she says. “For me, March 2016 marks the beginning of my journey with Hosts International.”

The Beginning of a Career in Homestay Accommodation

Aneta joined the company as Assistant to the Groups Manager, supporting group bookings and accommodation arrangements for visiting students.

“At the time, I joined as Assistant to the Groups Manager without really knowing how much I would progress and change in the following ten years,” she explains.

Those early experiences gave her valuable insight into the world of international student accommodation and the important role played by homestay hosts.

Growing Through Different Roles

Over time, Aneta progressed through several positions within the organisation, each offering a broader understanding of the sector.

“Over the past years, I have had the privilege of working across several key positions,” she explains. “I started as Assistant to the Groups Manager and later progressed to Groups Manager.”

When her personal circumstances changed and she relocated from London, she moved into the role of Direct Sales Coordinator. Each stage of her career added new perspectives.

“All these roles helped me gain a broad and in depth understanding of our operations, partnerships, and the needs of our students and partners,” she says.

Stepping into Leadership

In March 2024, Aneta reached another important milestone when she became Deputy Operations Manager at Hosts International.

“I was delighted to step into the role of Deputy Operations Manager,” she says.

The position reflects her long term commitment to the organisation and its leadership team, as well as her dedication to maintaining high standards across operations.

“My focus continues to be on supporting high standards of service, clear communication, and strong collaboration with our partners.”

When it comes to the heartbeat of our operations, Aneta truly stands out. Harsha Brown, Director at Hosts International, describes her as “my right hand – I couldn’t manage without her. Aneta embodies everything Hosts International stands for: our ethics, our ethos, and the values we hold dear. She’s more than a colleague; she’s an extension of me, the company, and the principles Peter championed every day.”

The Importance of Trust and Partnership

Throughout her career, Aneta has worked and still works very closely with language schools, agents, guardians, and students. These relationships are central to delivering a positive homestay experience. This is reflected in the amount of positive reviews and feedback Aneta received for her service and personality.

“I value the importance of trust, reliability, and responsiveness in all our partnerships,” she explains.

Aneta has a special connection with several key locations she has nurtured and grown over the years—from Brighton to Liverpool and everywhere in between. She leads these sites alongside her trusted team of four, while also supporting the wider Hosts International family in her role as Deputy Operations Manager. Her commitment ensures that every location reflects the values and spirit that make Hosts International so special.

This trust is equally important when working with homestay hosts, who play a vital role in welcoming international students to the UK and Ireland. By providing a supportive home environment, hosts help students settle into a new country and culture.

Looking Ahead

After nearly a decade with Hosts International, Aneta remains focused on strengthening partnerships and supporting the network of homestay hosts who make the student experience possible.

“I look forward to continuing to work with you and strengthening our partnership in the years ahead,” she says. “Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need any support or have any questions.”

As international education continues to grow, the dedication of homestay hosts in the UK and Ireland remains at the heart of the experience for thousands of students each year.

Since 1988, Hosts International has been at the forefront of homestay provision, offering international students more than just accommodation, a genuine home away from home. What started as a small North London operation helping a handful of students find safe places to stay grew into something much larger when Peter Brown brought his wealth of experience running a major international college in London into the mix.

Peter’s years of teaching diploma and degree programs to students from around the globe gave him unique insight into what international students need, not just academically, but personally. His college required safe, reliable, and affordable accommodation, yet finding consistent homestay options was becoming increasingly difficult. Concerned about losing access to suitable placements, Peter acquired Hosts International, relocated operations to the college in Central London, and set the foundations for the trusted network the company is today. From there, Hosts International grew steadily, guided by Peter’s core values: care, respect, and the human touch.

Understanding Students from Their Perspective

At the heart of Hosts International is a team that genuinely understands the international student experience. Harsha, who now leads the company following Peter’s passing, knows first-hand what it is like to live abroad. Having arrived in the UK from Sri Lanka as a student herself, she stayed with three different host families, gaining invaluable insight into the highs and lows of student life.

Harsha began her journey at Hosts International by visiting the host families Peter had acquired. Her role was simple, yet vital: evaluate whether she would want to live there as a student. From a corner desk in the college offices, she started managing accommodation placements, infusing her work with empathy and experience. Slowly, the company grew organically. Schools and agents started asking, “Can you handle our student accommodation?” and Hosts International’s first clients were secured.

“There is a reason we do this,” Harsha explains. “Homestays should be the go to option for students. We believe in the transformative power of living with a host family.”

Her leadership ensures that Hosts International continues to deliver personalised experiences, exceptional care, and high-quality service across its network of trusted providers.

“We understand students because we are not just an agency,” Harsha adds. “We have been a provider for a school, working directly with students, parents, and agents. Peter and I travelled worldwide, visiting students in Iran, China, India, Nigeria, and South America. Meeting students and their families face to face gave us a true understanding of their needs.”

“We like to be called an ‘Accommodation Provider Partner,’” she continues, “because it reflects the role we play in a student’s journey.”

Peter, a proud Northerner from Lancashire, built relationships on honesty, humour, and trust. Trained as an engineer but experienced in sales, he brought a diverse career background into everything he did.

“Together, Peter and I always worked tirelessly to ensure we never let anyone down intentionally,” Harsha recalls. “We are fully committed to these long-standing partnerships.”

Relationships Built on Trust and Humanity

Peter set the benchmark for building lasting relationships with schools, agents, host families, and students. Known for his authenticity and warmth, he modelled the kind of trust and respect that remains central to Hosts International today. Many partnerships have lasted 20 to 30 years, a testament to the company’s dedication to responsiveness, care, and attention to detail.

A Dedicated Team of Experienced Homestay Providers

Hosts International’s team brings decades of experience and passion to every placement. Long-serving professionals like Andrew, Aneta, and Jessica ensure that each student is matched with a home that meets the highest standards. Together, they often joke that they have over 100 years of combined experience, but their enthusiasm for homestay management has never waned.

Reflecting the diversity of the students they serve, the team brings global perspectives while sharing a unified commitment to excellent service.

Thoughtful Growth Across the UK and Ireland

Hosts International has expanded strategically across London, Brighton, Bournemouth, Bristol, Manchester, York, Leeds, Liverpool, Edinburgh, and Ireland, always maintaining a focus on quality. As expert homestay providers, they combine meticulous vetting, personalised matching, and ongoing support to ensure every placement is safe, welcoming, and enriching.

Registered with the British Council, Hosts International adheres to rigorous safety and safeguarding standards, giving students, parents, and schools complete confidence. The company also collaborates closely with a wide range of educational providers including boarding schools, sixth forms, independent schools, universities, and guardianship programmes, while complying with AEGIS, ISI, and OFSTED requirements, as well as working with education agents worldwide.

People First, Always

At Hosts International, people come first. Every placement considers a student’s lifestyle, location preferences, and dietary needs, with 24/7 support available. Guided by Peter’s vision, Harsha’s experience, and the team’s expertise, the company ensures students thrive, host families feel supported, and partners can trust every placement.

Looking to the Future

As demand for reliable homestay providers grows, Hosts International continues to lead with integrity, care, and innovation. By expanding their host network, developing new tools, and nurturing lasting partnerships, the company ensures homestay experiences remain safe, seamless, and transformative.

Hosts International is more than a network of homestay providers. It is a community of people who care, guided by experience, and inspired by the belief that living with a host family can truly change a student’s journey.

Since 1988, Hosts International has been at the forefront of homestay management, providing international students with not just a place to stay, but a true home‑away‑from‑home experience. What began as a small, service-driven initiative in North London at someone’s kitchen table, has grown into a trusted network of homestay providers across the United Kingdom and Ireland, supporting language schools, universities, apprenticeship programmes, and global partners for over three decades.

From the start, Hosts International understood that effective homestay management is about more than allocating students to a room. It’s about creating safe and welcoming environments where students can thrive, develop language skills, and experience cultural exchange. By combining meticulous vetting processes, ongoing support, and personalised allocation, Hosts International ensures each placement delivers a meaningful experience for both students and host families.

Thoughtful Growth Built on Quality Homestay Management

Over the years, Hosts International has expanded its homestay management services across multiple UK cities including London, Bristol, Manchester, York, Leeds, Liverpool, Edinburgh and more across the UK, while also establishing a growing presence in Ireland. This growth reflects a commitment to quality, consistency, and the evolving needs of students, apprentices, and professionals seeking trusted accommodation solutions.

Quality and compliance have always been central to Hosts International’s approach to homestay management. Registered with the British Council, the company adheres to rigorous standards that prioritise safety, safeguarding, and exceptional service, giving schools and agents confidence that every student is supported in a secure and welcoming environment.

Longstanding Partnerships That Strengthen Homestay Management

Successful homestay management is built on collaboration, and Hosts International has cultivated strong, enduring relationships with our partners that spans over 20 or even 30 years in some cases. These personal relationships are founded on mutual respect, trust, responsiveness, and a deep understanding of partner requirements, whether for personalised student placements, transport planning, dietary considerations, or 24/7 support.

The company’s team of dedicated professionals ensures that every partnership benefits from expert homestay management, delivering tailored solutions that meet the diverse needs of students while maintaining the highest standards of service.

Where Hosts International Stands Today

Today, Hosts International is recognised as a trusted leader in homestay management, supported by a network of carefully chosen and fully vetted host families. At the core of our work is a deeply personal, human approach. We’ve always partnered closely with schools to understand each student’s individual needs—whether it’s location, lifestyle, or dietary preferences—so that every placement becomes a positive, reassuring, and truly transformative experience. With us, no one has to worry about accommodation; they can simply focus on enjoying their journey.

The company’s success is driven by core values of professionalism, care, and responsiveness — principles that continue to guide its interactions with partners, hosts, and students alike.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Homestay Management

As the demand for quality homestay management grows, Hosts International remains committed to expansion that honours its roots: innovation with purpose, growth without compromise, and service with a personal touch. The company is continually enhancing its host network, developing new tools and processes, and supporting partners with tailored solutions to make international study and work placements seamless, secure, and enriching.

At its core, Hosts International continues to put people first. Its mission — to provide outstanding homestay management that connects students with life-changing experiences — remains as relevant today as it was at the company’s inception.

Running a school in today’s English Language Teaching world is no small feat. Teams are smaller, budgets are tighter, and expectations are higher than ever. Many schools still try to manage homestay programmes themselves, thinking it saves money—or gives them control.

But as one partner told us:
“Your services are crucial to us… We just cannot do it ourselves.”

The Hidden Cost of Doing It Yourself

Many schools still try to manage homestays in-house. The reasoning is understandable: “It’ll save money,” or “we’ll have better control.” But the reality often looks very different. Managing host families involves far more than paperwork:

Compliance and safeguarding – ensuring DBS checks, British Council standards, and inspections are all met.

Operational strain – juggling bookings, emergencies, and unexpected issues.

Staff burnout – handling constant calls, complaints, and replacements takes a heavy toll.

What seems like a cost-saving exercise can quietly drain time, energy, and morale—and affect the students who matter most.

Why Partnership Changes Everything

This is where partnering with Hosts International makes a real difference. We take care of the homes so schools can focus on what really matters: teaching, student care, and agent relationships.

“We have agents, students, and academic delivery to focus on, not worrying about host families,” says one partner.

With our experience, systems, and dedicated team, schools gain:

Confidence – compliance and safeguarding frameworks you can trust.

Support – booking officers and managers who know your students, your area, and your families.

Flexibility – handling peak periods, group arrivals, and last-minute bookings.

Human connection – real people who answer calls, resolve problems quickly, and never hide behind emails.

More Than Outsourcing—It’s Smart, Safe, and Human

Outsourcing homestay management isn’t a luxury—it’s smart business. It protects students, safeguards staff, and allows schools to make the best use of resources. Our partners often say it’s “one less thing to worry about.”

One partner explained it best:
“Your services are crucial to us. Especially now, when schools need to streamline or cope with sudden surges in student numbers, knowing you are there for us means we can focus on agents, students, and course delivery—not worrying about British Council compliance, safety, or managing hosts. And your approachable, responsive, and genuinely caring team makes all the difference.”

Focus on What Matters

Imagine a school where academic teams are free to focus on teaching, students feel supported in welcoming homes, and emergencies are handled without stress. That’s the reality when homestay management is in trusted hands.

If you’re planning for 2026, think about where your energy and resources are best spent. Let us take care of the homes—so you can focus on the heart of education.

At Hosts International, we believe our greatest asset isn’t just our extensive network of host families or our decades of experience – it’s our people. This month, we’d like to shine a spotlight on Aneta, our Deputy General Manager, who oversees operations for many of our key locations, including Brighton, Edinburgh and Liverpool, to name just a few.

‘Aneta is a star!’

During our recent summer feedback surveys, a clear pattern emerged. Partner after partner mentioned Aneta by name, praising her professionalism, responsiveness and reliability. One language school summed it up perfectly:

“Aneta is a star! She is very helpful and will get back to you super quickly to help with anything that arises. It’s a pleasure working with her.”

Making busy summers manageable

Summer is invariably our busiest season, with last-minute bookings, unexpected changes and the pressure to place hundreds of students quickly and appropriately. For our partners juggling their own busy periods, having someone like Aneta makes all the difference. Another partner shared their experience:

“Aneta was always so helpful and professional – she made a very stressful summer a lot more manageable, and I knew that I could rely on her to ensure that the placement of our students went smoothly.”

Speed, understanding and patience

What consistently stands out in feedback is our staff’s remarkable responsiveness and empathy. Our clients know that we can be relied on to understand exactly what they need and to handle any issues that arise swiftly. We believe that this combination of efficiency and understanding is what transforms a working relationship into a genuine partnership.

When partners consistently rate our services with excellent scores and recommendation ratings, we know it’s because of team members like Aneta who go above and beyond every single day.

We’d love to hear from you

Did you fill in our recent survey? If not, here’s your chance to share your thoughts — we’d really value your feedback.

Do you agree?

Autumn has arrived with its changing colours and reflective mood, reminding us that the world of homestays is full of unexpected moments, heart-warming connections…and the occasional surprise. This month we wanted to share three unique stories from our hosts, our team and our partners that truly capture the spirit of what we do at Hosts International.

From ‘no pets’ to best friends

One of our hosts in Liverpool lives with six small dogs. When we placed three Omani students with her, they’d initially requested strictly no pets – a common request from students from the Middle East. Despite this, we always explain that pets are very much part of British family life and we encourage students to keep an open mind. The result? The students absolutely adored the dogs! They played with them, took them for walks, fed them and groomed them with genuine enthusiasm. It was a beautiful reminder that stepping outside our comfort zones often leads to the most memorable experiences.

The best kind of surprise

During a particularly busy placement day this summer, our colleague Jacira started feeling unwell. We’d noticed she’d been snacking much more than usual and when she rushed to the bathroom several times that day, we teased her about eating something dodgy. The real story? Jacira is expecting! We’re thrilled to announce that Hosts International will be welcoming its fifth team baby. True to Peter’s values of supporting working women, we’re excited to continue this tradition of celebrating our growing team families.

Handling the unexpected with grace

One of our client language schools welcomed a large Thai group and, as always, we placed students according to their rooming preferences, including two boys sharing a room at one host family. The next morning, the host called us surprised when one student came down in full makeup, high heels and a mini dress, identifying as a female. What could have been a slightly stressful situation was resolved swiftly and sensitively by our team. Within hours, we’d found an appropriate solution and the entire group went on to have a wonderful stay. It reminded everyone involved why clear communication, flexibility and professionalism matter so much in this industry.

These moments – surprising, heart-warming and sometimes challenging – are what make homestay accommodation so uniquely human.
