More Than 35 Years of Hosts International: Memories, Milestones and Stories That Shaped Us

Since its establishment in 1988, Hosts International has spent more than 35 years delivering trusted homestay accommodation across the UK and Ireland. We’re proud to reflect on a journey defined by care, resilience, and meaningful human connections. From humble beginnings with handwritten records to becoming a leading provider of student accommodation and welfare services, our story is one of dedication, adaptability, and a deeply personal approach. The Early Days of Homestay Accommodation Long before digital systems and instant communication, Hosts International operated with a simple but effective method: a card index box. Each host family had a handwritten card detailing their address and landline number, and student placements were carefully arranged over the phone. As our network of host families grew, so did the stacks of cards—some of our most loyal hosts had multiple pages stapled together, reflecting years of partnership and trust. In those early days, our commitment went far beyond administration. Our team would personally:
  • Drive to airports to collect international students
  • Welcome group arrivals across the UK
  • Provide a 24/7 emergency contact through Harsha’s personal mobile
  • Accompany students and host families to schools on their first day
This hands-on, human approach laid the foundation for the high-quality homestay experience we continue to deliver today. Rising to the Challenge Over more than three decades, Hosts International has supported students through some of the most challenging global events, always prioritising safety, welfare, and wellbeing. Responding to Crisis: 9/11 During the uncertainty of 9/11, there was no formal crisis plan—only a strong sense of responsibility. Our team quickly coordinated efforts across London, ensuring all students were safely accounted for, while maintaining constant communication with concerned parents around the world. Standing Strong During the 7/7 London Bombings In July 2005, London faced one of its darkest days with the 7/7 bombings. The attacks on the city’s transport system created immediate chaos and widespread fear, impacting thousands, including international students living and studying in the UK. For Hosts International, the priority was clear: ensure every student was safe, accounted for, and reassured during an extremely frightening time. Our team quickly mobilised to:
  • Contact all students and host families across London to confirm their safety
  • Provide guidance on travel restrictions and emergency protocols
  • Offer emotional support to students worried about family back home or unable to reach loved ones
The response demonstrated the resilience, dedication, and personal care that have always been the hallmark of our organisation. Even amidst a citywide crisis, the warmth and attentiveness of our host families ensured that students had a safe haven and the reassurance they needed. Standing Together During COVID-19 The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges for international students in the UK and Ireland. With school closures and travel restrictions in place, many students were unable to return home. We made a clear decision: every student would be supported, regardless of payment status. Our incredible host families demonstrated extraordinary compassion by:
  • Providing safe, secure environments during lockdowns
  • Delivering meals and daily support
  • Offering emotional reassurance during uncertain times
These moments reinforced what makes homestay unique—it’s not just accommodation, it’s a support system and a home away from home. Remembering Light-Hearted Moments Over the years, we’ve collected countless stories that highlight the diversity, humour, and cultural exchange at the heart of what we do. Some of our favourites include:
  • An international agent convinced that Harsha—known as “Harry”—was a man, only to be surprised upon meeting her
  • A Middle Eastern student who unexpectedly fell in love with his host family’s six dogs
  • A dramatic Pride rally evacuation, where our team flagged down black cabs across London, paid on personal credit cards, and successfully transported 50 students to the airport with just 20 minutes to spare
That same Italian group from the Pride incident continues to travel with us today—a testament to the long-lasting relationships we build. More Than 35 Years of Homestay Care and Personal Service Through global crises, cultural differences, and logistical challenges, one thing has remained constant: our unwavering commitment to exceptional student welfare and personalised service. At Hosts International, we believe that successful homestay experiences are built on:
  • Trust between students, hosts, and partners
  • Cultural understanding and inclusion
  • Reliable support, 24 hours a day
  • A genuine passion for helping students feel at home
